This year my son started attending the Boys' Club of New York www.bcny.org. So far, I've been very impressed. They have three locations (East Village, East Harlem, and Flushing) and been around for about 100 years. Afterschool, Saturdays, and some holidays they have free swim classes, organized sports, science, homework help, and other activities. My son really enjoys going and I like to know he's in a safe place with activities to enrich the mind and body. Plus, you attend on a drop in basis so you can come every day or just once in a while. The flexibility has come in very handy.
My son has been taking swim classes (free), there is a swim team too though he does not participate in that, violin lessons ($25 per semester or less if you do the multi semester rate) many other instruments are available. Plus many more activities including various sports, science, reading help, and more.
